Iceland Airwaves might be the old dog on the Reykjavík festival scene, but new kid on the block Sónar has taken the challenge of brighting gloomy February.
Held in the glacier-inspired Harpa, home of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Sónar is yet another sign of the growing stature of Reykjavík on the international music scene. Festival-goers also be enclosed in an award winning light show, courtesy of Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. You can enjoy a view of both the bay and the blue mountains from inside a work of art.
If you’re not in Iceland’s capital this weekend, you can at least sample some of the acts performing over the next three days. The headliners are mostly non-Icelandic, but the true magic of Sónar Reykjavík is in prospecting for the local gold.
