The Helix Collection from Georg Jensen: Mid-Century Meets Modern

The Helix collection, the new tea and coffee service from Danish design brand Georg Jensen, could easily be mistaken for a vintage mid-century modern silver service.

Including a thermo jug, tea pot, milk jug, bonbonniere, and tray, the service is rendered in polished stainless steel and features a slightly pear-shaped body with a rounded bottom. The handle is helix shaped, off-setting the curved body nicely; it doesn’t feel too round. With its clean lines and lack of extraneous decoration, the set is luxurious in its minimalism, highlighting the high quality and functionality of the materials.

“Working with [stainless steel], we wanted to accentuate the natural beauty of light and reflection that steel enables. But foremost, with the helix shape, we wanted to create a sense of movement in the steel,” the designers note.

The design firm behind the Helix collection, Bernadotte Kylberg, a Stockholm-based duo that works in both graphic and industrial design. Though they’re familiar with Georg Jensen’s design heritage (it’s hard to be a Scandinavian designer and not be), they wanted to make sure that they had a fresh take on the traditional items.

“It was very important for us not to dive straight into the Georg Jensen design archives – first we wanted to present our design proposal and give the brand new input, and we didn’t want to be too affected by Georg Jensen’s history,” the design duo notes.

And while the Helix Collection’s design may not be overladen with history, the series certainly stays true to the Georg Jensen DNA: expertly-crafted and beautiful. It’s the kind of drink service that you’ll have for a lifetime and likely beyond. While each piece on its own is lovely, it is the sum of the parts that are most impactful.

The Helix collection elevates an everyday activity – drinking coffee or tea – and makes it something special. The pared-down design allows the user to focus on the simple beauty of the items, of the drinking ritual, and of how the collection sits in its surroundings.

The seemingly effortless silhouette of the Helix, paired with its analytical design process, mirrors the shape of the helix itself: straightforward on the surface, with something more complicated behind it. A hallmark of Danish design, and Georg Jensen design, in a nutshell.
