Though winter can be rough in Copenhagen, it should never get in the way of food-lovers exploring what’s new in town.
I have hit the streets and found two fairly new eateries in this wonderful city. True, I arrived to both purple-handed, cold, and annoyed, but it was so worth it. Both have proven to me, once again, that the food scene in our town is remarkable and as diverse as its people.
One is a brunch spot in Amager that aims to redefine Copenhagen’s brunch offering. The other is a welcoming and elegant Middle Eastern restaurant that is well worth a visit (or several), right in the conveniently central location of Gråbrødtorv.
Here are the best new restaurant and cafe openings to try in Copenhagen:
John & Woo
This place will be a landmark on Copenhagen’s brunch scene in the near future: mark my words. The corner eatery is located near the always-pulsating Amagerbrogade, just a stone’s throw away from Christianshavn.
John & Woo is a small and cozy restaurant with white paper-clothed tables, a small bar, and two rooms separated by three steps where all the magic happens.
When having a chat with the owners, they passionately declared that they don’t want to be yet another restaurant that serves only avocado, waffles, eggs, and the classic items that are found in most brunch spots nowadays. They want to be authentic, unique, and set a new standard for brunch. In order to do so, they employed a team of real chefs, and the food is a reflection of that.
A creative, contemporary, NYC-style approach to brunch dining is what to expect at John & Woo. It’s not just a typical café; it’s a place where, besides the delicious food, you will get good service, good wine, good coffee…you get my drift.
Stop what you are doing now and try their steak & eggs as well as their créme brülee french toast, a caramelized butter toast with banana and mascarpone mousse. Wow!

Yaffa
Yaffa is a restaurant name that has been on every Copenhagen foodie’s lips for the past couple of months. I usually don’t trust the hype, but Yaffa delivers! We started with a crisp Riesling: the perfect way to start a meal, if you ask me.
Then the feast came! I can’t be the only one to experience child-like excitement when an abundance of beautiful, delicious food is presented to me with such respect and passion. And brought to me in colorful ceramic bowls from a country I have always wanted to visit? Almost too good to be true!
Flatbread, hummus with pickled chili and dukkah, falafel, fattoush, and onglet with cous cous and herbs. An explosion of flavors, textures, aromas, and colors that left us feeling drunk with happiness and awe.
As a chef, I respect the dedication and the challenge it represents to pay homage to a cuisine that is so far away from the local Danish cuisine, and do it in a way that warms the soul. Some of the flavors were recognizable to me not because I have eaten hummus or cous cous before, but because they spoke to me; they tasted like home. I am from Perú and my dinner mate is half Chinese and half Italian, but we both felt that there were dishes that tasted like something our grandmas could have made. Isn’t that amazing?
Call me emotional, but for me, food is pure emotion and love. Yaffa is doing things right. Expect an elegant yet relaxed dining experience, very friendly and skilled service team, magnificent wines (I drank four varieties) and one of the best locations in town. Stick around after your meal to drink wine and just enjoy yourself. Then thank me later.
