Summer is in sight now and Distortion is only a few weeks away, so if that’s not cause for celebration we don’t know what is. Here’s our pick of this month’s concerts, markets, festivals and much more.

Monday 1st May
International Workers’ Day
The annual celebration of activism and solidarity with industrial workers everywhere. In Copenhagen crowds of up to 50,000 commemorate the occasion in Østerbro’s Fælledparken with speeches and even an address from the Prime Minister. Pack some beer and make a day of it.
Tuesday 2nd May
Volunteer Spring Fair
If you’re a Copenhagen newbie or just fancy getting a bit more involved in its community, you’ll want to attend International House’s volunteer fair where there’ll be lots of different organisations and sports groups to hear about!
Wednesday 3rd May
Architectones at Cinemateket
The French artist, Xavier Veilhan, welcomes us into seven iconic modernist buildings in this captivating documentary examining design and the creative process. The film is a part of the Copenhagen Architecture Festival which runs until the 7th May.
Thursday 4th May
After Dark Our Explosive Sun
Our star, the Sun, is pretty central to our whole setup here on Earth. Astrophysicist Tina Ibsen will examine exactly why it’s so crucial to life on this planet and how the star is actually home to the most violent processes in the solar system…
Friday 5th – Monday 8th May
Salsa Festival
Get your cha-cha on at Copenhagen’s seventh annual Salsa Festival. You can choose from 50 different dance workshops, picking up tips and moves from world class performers along the way!
Saturday 6th – 7th May
Finder Keepers Design Market
In our humble opinion Finders Keepers is the holy grail of all flea markets. Over the course of two days you can pick up some beautiful and unique items – including fashion, jewellery and homeware – from a heap of talented designers. Well worth the 50kr door admission.

Elmegade Market
Open-air markets are a sure sign that summer is on its way. Join Nørrebro’s locals down Elmegade and Birkegade for a good rummage, BBQ and face painting!

Naturally Nourished Book Launch
Sarah Britton, Copenhagen-based founder of health food blog My New Roots has published her second cookbook, Naturally Nourished. To celebrate its release, SLOW workshops are hosting an afternoon of demos, tastings and talks with the author herself and Signe Voltelen, urban farmer and architect.

Foodie Bikes Food Market

Plant Exchange at DYRK Nørrebro
The green fingers at DYRK Nørrebro are hosting a plant exchange and want you to come play swap shop! The idea is straight foward: just bring your unwanted plants (must be healthy mind) and swap for new ones! Simple.
Thursday 11th May
Byhavens Opening Party
Just as all the summer flea markets are kicking off, as are all the outdoor concerts at Byhavens! The opening night will undoubtedly set the tone for a great season of music ahead. There’ll be flower bed planting, cocktails and tunes from Girls Night Out and DJ Rita Blue.
Brus Birthday Party

Boasting past performances at Roskilde, Trailer Park and Distortion, the synth-pop superstar duo First Hate are pegged for the top. Now their playing their uniquely intoxicating melodies to lille Vega and you don’t want to miss it.

Edible Cinema: ‘Perfume: The Story of a Murderer’
Cinematheque, Edible Cinema and Bombay Sapphire are joining forces to bring you Edible Cinema – a multi-sensory film experience. Tom Tykwer’s skin-crawling Perfume will be screened, supplemented with a sensory puzzle in which viewers receive a tray of little numbered boxes, ready to be opened and consumed at intervals during the film! Conde Nast Traveler called it ‘a feast for the eyes, ears and tastebuds’.
Thursday 18th May
International Museum Day
Come and celebrate the true bastions of culture! Museums all over the city will be participating and putting on special events. Last year over 35,000 museums took part across 145 countries!
Friday 19th May
Solhverv at Rust
Copenhagen-homegrown quintet, Solhverv, play their whirly fusion of synth paired with dreamy guitar riffs for crowds at Rust. Gaffa has already hailed the group with 5 out of 6 stars, so these are definitely ones to watch.
Saturday 20th – Sunday 21st May
Click Festival
An open and inclusive festival that embraces the borders between music, science, art and technology takes over Helsingør for the day. Mykki Blanco and Cakes Da Killa are on the roster so don’t miss it!
Monday 22nd May
Hans Zimmer Live at Forum
Hollywood’s most sought after and innovative film composer is performing at Forum. Zimmer, who has written tracks for Planet Earth II and Netflix’s The Crown, will be accompanied by 60 other talented musicians playing select music from his hugely successful and lengthy career.
Wednesday 24th May
Copenhagen Zombie Crawl
It’s the 10th anniversary of Copenhagen’s Zombie Crawl; grab your closest undead soul and reenact a scene from the Walking Dead by shuffling around the city’s streets with torn clothes and bloodied makeup. It’ll be lols promise.
Saturday 27th May
A Naturally Nourished Spring Celebration
An inspiring evening – hosted by cookbook author Sarah Britton and Co-founders of Kost Shop, Asmus and Peter – celebrating all things seasonal and local this Spring. Expect a special meal; fully vegetarian with 4 courses and drink-pairings!

Distortion
Copenhagen’s much hailed Summer Street party takes over the neighbourhoods of Norrebro and Vesterbro once again this year. Come and get grubby over a couple of beer-fuelled days of partying and pure hedonism.
Ongoing in May
William Kentridge at Louisiana
This is the first time that South African artist William Kentridge has been shown in Scandinavia in such a major solo exhibition. Johannesburg-born artist combines his great love of theatre and film in a series of powerful installations examining humanity and how as human beings we try to navigate the world we’re in and too are subjects to mapping in turn. On until June 6th.
Pissarro. A Meeting on St. Thomas at Ordrupgaard
As the centenary of the sale of the Danish West Indies comes around, Ordrupgaard gallery’s new exhibition shines a light on the meeting of two artists: the Danish Golden Age painter Fritz Melbye and the father of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro. The pair met on the island of St. Thomas and played an influential role in each other’s life and works.
