There are oh-so many bakeries in Copenhagen, and many of them are excellent. But how to choose? Whether you’re looking for dense, flavourful dark rye bread, a traditional cinnamon roll from a Danish pastry shop to go with your coffee, or a cake to take to a large gathering, there’s a Copenhagen bakery that has what you need.
These are the best bakeries in Copenhagen, including fresh bread and delicious, traditional Danish pastries:
Skt Peders Bageri
This independent bakery sits on one of the cutest streets in Copenhagen. Aside from their legendary Onsdagsnegle (an extra large cinnamon roll sold at a discount on Wednesday), they also make a variety of delicious, fresh sandwiches, pizza slices and other bread-based items. This is a great pit-stop for takeaway goodies (including some of the best Danishes in Copenhagen!) and a stroll through the centre of the city or a nearby park.

Mirabelle
There are two key products you need to try at Mirabelle, the bakery launched by former noma-alum Chef Christian Puglisi: the croissant (in the cover image) and the sourdough bread. Both are mind-blowingly good. The bakery is churning out fresh loaves and rolls all day, but there’s also a nice sit-down cafe where you can have delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner options. There’s a bakery takeaway window if you just want your bag of croissants, cups of coffee, and time for a stroll around the buzzy Nørrebro neighborhood.

Hart Bageri
Tartine’s Richard Hart and noma’s René Redzepi teamed up to open a bakery in Copenhagen and people went as totally bonkers for it as one would imagine. But, they’re not wrong. Both the pastries and breads are excellent (if a little pricey). The space is small, so you can either grab a quick coffee or take away; it’s not really a place to set up your laptop and spend the morning. Be prepared to wait for your goodies – the line is often quite long.

Lille Bakery
Lille is an artisanal bakery and cafe in a large industrial space on Refshaleøen. They serve up hearty salads and open face sandwiches on fresh bread, as well as a range of fantastic pastries. The real stuff? Their doughnuts are outrageous; fluffy berliners filled with things like bay leaf cream. We just wish they packaged their doughnuts to-go a little better (they just throw ’em in a bag), so we could take more of them home!

Vedels Konditori & Bageri
This is one of those locals-swear-by-it spots. Vedels sells both bakery fare like fresh breads as well as custom and beautifully-decorated cakes. Their bakery and cafe in Holbergsgade offers space to sit and enjoy your roll or small cake, while the Øster Farimagsgade location is more for takeaways. Vedels makes wonderful occasion and wedding cakes, if you need something extra special.

Lagkagehuset
There are loads of Lagkagehuset locations around Copenhagen, and they all offer the same consistently delicious, fresh baked goods and breads. Their rye bread and spelt bread are both excellent. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, be sure to check out their huge flødeboller or one of their many pastry options. They also have sandwiches, salads and pizza slices for lunch. These tend to be fairly large spaces, so there will be room to sit, although it can get busy in the early morning and around lunch.

Bageriet BRØD
This cool little bakery is from the same hip folks behind Vesterbro favorite Kihoskh, and everything is right there in the name: real good bread. Pick up delicious freshly baked bread and rolls, as well as a cup of coffee to-go. Begirt BRØD is a real local spot; the prices are good and the product is tasty.

Leckerbaer
Simple, beautiful and delicious; it’s easy to see why Leckbaer has become so popular! Though this isn’t a traditional bakery in that they don’t bake bread, they make a range of lovely cookies and pastries, focusing specifically on an update of the classic Danish butter cookie in a number of modern forms and flavor combinations. Get a flight of cookies, a big cup of coffee, and you’re set for the afternoon.

Conditori La Glace
This centrally-located shop is chic and old fashioned in the classic Parisienne way, with a range of beautifully made cakes and other small pastries like macarons, eclairs and more. If you’re looking for a custom-made cake for an occasion, this is the absolute best you can do. They also run by-appointment talks and workshops for cake and chocolate-making, if you’re looking to expand your kitchen repertoire. It’s a great spot for a pot of tea and a plate of sweet treats; make a table reservation if you can, as La Glace is busy every single day. Prices are high but so is the quality.

Rein Van Hauen is a bakery chain that can be found all over the city, easy to spot thanks to their bright pink logo. They make bread, cakes and other pastries like tebirkes, kanelsnegle, scones and linser. Juno the Bakery
If you enjoy queueing (any Brits out there?), you are really going to like Juno the Bakery. Luckily for those who only see queues as a way to get from point A to point B, the baked goods at the end of the line are worth the wait (which is approximately 10 – 15 minutes on any day of the week, any time of day). Juno is a small Swedish-style bakery that produces bread, cardamon buns and, during the season, semlor. The cardamon buns are, hands down, the best in Copenhagen; sticky, sweet, moist and so flavourful. The semlor are tasty but a little ready, but they are beautifully-assembled, so you get the full Swedish experience. They also sell good coffee; either Koppi roasters or Prolog. There is a counter to sit but this is more of a takeaway spot.

Holms Bageri
Though they make all the bakery basics very well: fresh breads, pastries, and sandwiches, there’s something about a Holms Bageri pizza slice that is just irresistible. This is a go-to for a fast (and admittedly not super-healthy) lunch while wandering around the centre of the city or shopping in Illum department store. On warm days, sitting outside of the Købmagergade location is a great people-watching spot.
