I will be upfront and tell you that I’m neither a vegetarian nor a vegan. I do, however, eat a very limited amount of meat (I don’t like it that much) and almost no dairy (except for cheese. Because, cheese). But this website is about sharing life in Scandinavia, even the parts that we may not partake in ourselves.
I find the subject of meat and animal-product consumption to be a fascinating one. I’ve lived all over the world and have observed a wealth of cultural approaches to food. I think this is the reason that I can’t allow myself to be dogmatic about food intake; for every good reason to be one way, there’s another good reason to be another way. I do my best to minimize my animal-product use but I also allow health, cultural sensitivity and cravings to be part of the way I think about food.
All that said, eating vegetarian or vegan in Copenhagen isn’t as hard as it used to be. As a city that values pork products above almost all else but also has a small but growing vegetarian faction (1.5% of the population in a 2006 EU survey), it’s necessary to have choices available for those who don’t want bacon on literally everything.
Not all of the restaurants listed are entirely vegetarian/vegan, but those that aren’t (noted in the descriptions) have great green options. We’ve also made sure to share some takeaway joints so that even those on-the-go can find something to eat.
