December brings the shortest days of the year with a side of festive hygge. Christmas trees and lights pop up all over the city, window sills are adorned with candles, and Christmas markets take over the squares in the city center. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas or not, Copenhagen in December is particularly charming.
From exhibitions to pop-ups to movie screenings to plenty of gløgg at various Christmas markets, here’s what’s happening in Copenhagen in December:
Friday 24th November – Friday 1st December
Bendito del Perú Pop-Up at Refugio
Based between Lima and Copenhagen, Bendito del Perú is known for its t-shirts made from organic Peruvian cotton. Now they’re turning three and you’re invited. Come by Refugio to explore the brand’s universe, meet the team, and purchase a curated selection of pieces. From 11 am to 7 pm.
Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd December
Edition 1 Take 2
Swing by inter.pblc at Hamletsgade 6 in Nœrrebro to see what happens when designers and artists breathe new life into deadstock material provided by Copenhagen-based label Stem. The result is beautiful food for thought. The opening night starts at 6 pm with a performance at 6:30 pm and the exhibition will remain open over the weekend, Saturday from 1 to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.
Friday 1st December
Opening: ÅRGANG 2023 at Møstings
Kick off December with an art opening when Møstings in Frederiksberg presents works by 15 recent graduates of Denmark’s art academies. Stop by from 5 to 7 pm.
Christmas Tree Decorating at Blågårds Plads
As every year, there will be a giant Christmas tree on Blågårds Plads throughout the holiday season. Come by to help decorate it and spread some festive vibes. From 4-6 pm.
Saturday 2nd – Sunday 3rd December
FindersKeepers Christmas Edition
FindersKeepers is a popular destination for all things design. In December, the team is hosting the market’s annual Christmas edition. Browse festive decoration for your home and potential Christmas gifts for loved ones (or yourself). From 11 am to 5 pm. Buy your ticket in advance and get pre-access at 10 am. Tickets cost 50 DKK per day or 75 DKK for the entire weekend.
Niko June Xmas Shop
Looking for a gift for a fellow design lover or a new addition to your home? Shop previous collections, samples, and one-of-a-kind pieces at this year’s edition of Niko June’s Xmas shop. From 12 to 6 pm at Uplandsgade 52N.
Saturday 2nd December
Christmas Market on Værnedamsvej and Tullinsgade
Get your festive feelings going when one of Copenhagen’s coziest corners is transforming into an open air Christmas market. Have a stroll around, shop vintage finds and more, and feast on winter treats like waffles. From 9 am to 4 pm. Want to put up a stall? Find more information on the website.
Friday 8th – Saturday 16th December
&Tradition Pop-Up at Lille Petra
Danish design brand &Tradition is hosting a pop-up shop in its cosy café Lille Petra. Swing by to explore the newly released Quarter Past Noon Books, a compendium of three volumes of recipes and storytelling, alongside the Quarter Past Noon capsule collection, as well as a curated selection of home accessories, scents, and lamps. Get some gifts sorted or treat yourself to a little something from 8 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 5 pm on Saturdays.
Sunday 10th December
Rita Blå’s Christmas Flea Market
Go on treasure hunt and get some holiday presents sorted at the Christmas-edition of Rita Blås Flea Market. There’ll be clothing, furniture, and much more as well as coffee and sweets for a cosy afternoon break. From 11 am to 4 pm.
Soho House Christmas Market
Still searching for that perfect gift? Soho House Copenhagen will be hosting a festive market on Sunday December 10th.
Come by to see a carefully curated selection of emerging Scandinavian crafts, from ceramics and oil pastels to jewellery and clothing, there will be something for everyone.
Grab a steaming mug of gløgg and peruse all we have to offer this festive season. The market will take place on the terrace of Soho House from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm and is open to the public.
Danish on a Sunday: Tove’s Room at Cinemateket
Tove Ditlevsen was one of Denmark’s most celebrated authors, especially known for her key role in women’s liberation movement. Married to sadistic news Editor-in-Chief Victor Andreasen, Tove’s life was marked by power struggles, drug abuse, and repeated admissions to the psychiatric ward – the only place in which she truly finds peace to write.
This movie zooms in on a particular day in 1963 when Tove and Victor receive a lunch guest, the promising young author Klaus Rifbjerg, who celebrates the modern woman. Klaus believes they’ll be talking about literature, what he doesn’t know is that a blood bath awaits him.
‘Tove’s Room’ is a woman’s story about the price of her submission. The movie is screened in Danish with English subtitles at 2:15 pm.
Thursday 14th December
Wellbeing and community dinner at Apollo Bar
Meditation, Yoga, and a warming dinner in the beautiful surroundings of Apollo Bar – the perfect way to ease yourself into the (almost) weekend. Newbie or pro, everyone’s welcome when Helen from Rave Yoga sets the focus on inner strength, Thorkild May guides you through Heartfulness Meditation, and Good Habit Co.’s Marius Bjerre-Petersen gives a workshop about the power of habits. Tickets cost 300 DKK and the event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Get your tickets via the website.
Sunday 17th December
Christmas City Walk
Learn about Danish Christmas traditions during this special City Walk. How did people celebrate in the 1800s? How long has the Advent wreath been used in Denmark? What is a Christmas carol? When did people start decorating spruce in the living rooms? The trip starts at Vor Frue Kirke at 2 pm and ends at the Christmas market in Nyhavn at 3:30 pm. Tickets cost 170 DKK and can be found on the website.

Christmas Eve
In Denmark, Christmas Eve on 24th December is the most important part of the holiday season. Things get very traditional, from the food to the dance around the Christmas tree.

Get your fix of fresh, seasonal produce and meet the people who grow it: Grønt Market’s mission is it to build a strong connection and community between farmers and eaters.
There’re four editions each month: on the first Sunday of the month, the market stalls are put up in front of Lille Bakery on Refshaleøen, every second Sunday at Liatuens Plads in Vesterbro, every third Sunday at Skjolds Plads in Nørrebro, and every fourth Sunday in Aksel Møllers Have in Frederiksberg.

Lille Fugle at GL Strand

French Film Mondays at Grand
Dive into the world of French cinema! Every Monday, Institut Francais presents a selected French movie in the cosy ambience of old school cinema Grand Teatret. The screenings start at 7 pm and are in original language with English subtitles. Find the program on the website.

Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas Tables
Into festive table settings? Then this is for you! Every year, Royal Copenhagen asks a selection of creatives to set christmas tables in its flagship store. This year marks the 60th anniversary of this proud tradition so get ready for a (visual) feast. Stop by the store at Amagertorv 6 all throughout December.
Ruben Hughes: The Youth at Leica Store Copenhagen
Titled “The Youth,” this exhibition by Ruben Hughes explores identity from adolescence to young adulthood through a series of streetstyle photographs. It will be on display in the Leica Store until January 2024.

Tobias Rehberger: Through the back side of my eyes at GL Strand
German artist Tobias Rehberger explores the social, spatial, and experiential dimensions of contemporary art through colorful, humorous and not least critically-engaged works. Playing with perception, literally and conceptually, Rehberger works across media, creating installations, sculptures, paintings, as well as sound and video art. GL Strand presents his first solo exhibition in Denmark until January 2024.
Pussy Riot at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
At this point, Pussy Riot is a household name. Formed in Moscow in 2011, the feminist-activist art collective are famous for their spontaneous and courageous actions challenging the Russian regime. Documenting their decade-long story, this is Pussy Riot’s first ever museum exhibition. It will be on display until January 2024.
Kunstnernes København (The Artists’ Copenhagen) at Nikolaj Kunsthal
This group exhibition zooms in on how Copenhagen is experienced through the eyes of artists, showcasing works by 15 Danish artists. The exhibition is on display until January 2024.
Care & Repair at Designmuseum Danmark
Reusing, repairing, and recycling are not new but in the light of climate change and the cost of living crisis, they have gained renewed relevancy. With this exhibition, Designmuseum Danmark explores how designers of furniture, fashion, and objects increasingly rediscover and work with related historical practices. The exhbition is part of the series “Akut” which focuses on the latest developments in the field of design, especially in the context of societal challenges. It will be on display until February 2024.
The Fantastic Bus by Jakob Martin Strid at Copenhagen Contemporary
Coinciding with the launch of Jakob Martin Strid’s largest book work to date, this exhibition showcases the original illustrations behind it. Over 50 drawings, some measuring over 2 meters, allow you to step into his unique universe and to follow a road trip through incredible landscapes, into the stratosphere, and further to the mythical land of Balanka to save little Timo. It will be on display until April 2024.
After Nature at Glyptoteket
“Nature no longer exists. That wild, untamed nature, untouched by human beings, is a thing of the past.” So states the author Josefine Klougart in her essay After Nature.
Glyptotek’s new special exhibition “After Nature – A New Reading of the Glyptotek’s Paintings by Writer Josefine Klougart“ is a kind of 3D essay, combining the author’s texts with with masterpieces from the Glyptotek’s collection.
These masterpieces include French painters Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Henri Rousseau as well as Danish painters such as Christen Købke, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, and Johan Thomas Lundbye. The exhibition runs until August 2024.
Little Table, Cover Thyself! at Design Museum Denmark
There’s something special about the art of table-setting and the way a decorated table sets the scene for special and everyday occasions. Experience how table-setting has changed over time and admire the collection of plates, figurines, jugs, and more. All the way through 2025, seven of the museum’s historical tables are decorated with items from the renaissance until today.
Guided tour: Highlights & Introduction at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Every Thursday from 2-2:45 pm, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art offers a guided tour of the museum’s collection and architecture. The tour is free for everyone but you need to pick up a ticket at the entrance up to two hours before the tour. This ticket is free for everyone with a valid ticket to the museum.
