Amidst icy temperatures, wind, rain, and the occasional snow fall, Copenhageners savor every ray of sunshine that presents itself. Luckily, the city’s museums provide refuge from the harsh Scandinavian weather and with plenty of new exhibitions opening, there’s lots to be explored. So let’s embrace winter with museum strolls, movie screenings, jazz nights, and market visits followed by home cooked meals and candle light. Sounds hyggeligt? You bet!

Anish Kapoor: Descension ar Arken

The British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor works with a wide range of media, from sculpture and architectural work to painting and drawing, using materials such as pigment, wax, granite, marble, limestone, and polished stainless steel. His monumental artwork “Descension” has now taken over an entire exhibition space at Arken. Simple in appearance yet captivating and in a way disturbing, it announces its presence with an unsettling, rumbling sound of rushing water even before we see the work. The artwork is on display until March 2025.

The exhibition will be on display until June 2025.

Alexej Jawlensky at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Though closely associated with the European avant-garde movements at the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian painter Alexej Jawlensky (1864-1941) seems to have found his very own artistic voice rather late in life. This exhibition focuses on Jawlensky’s path towards a highly distinctive expression in the form of his small, beautiful and mysterious meditations. Having been born into a regimental family in Russia in 1864, he abandoned a potential military carreer in favor of the arts. At the art academy in St. Petersburg he met the painter Marianne von Werefkin and together, the couple moved to Munich. There, Jawlensky attended a private painting school with, among others, Wassily Kandinsky and became closely connected to the famous artist movement “Der Blaue Reiter” which Kandinsky initiated. The exhibition will be on display until June 2025.
