Sunday 16th March

Danish on a Sunday: Melody of Murder at Cinemateket

With this series, Cinemateket opens up the world of Danish cinema to a non-Danish speaking audience by screening movies in the original language with English subtitles. Directed by Bodil Ipsen during the German Occupation of Denmark, Melody of Murder (Mordets Melodi) follows the investigation of a shocking series of murders in Copenhagen. Each homicide is preceded by someone singing a French cabaret song, popularized by Sonja, a local chanteuse who shares the same name as the murder victims — and who soon becomes a suspect. Ipsen delves into mind control (via hypnotism) and portrays Copenhagen as a city under siege, perhaps commenting obliquely on the Occupation itself. The film is screened at 2:15 pm and the arrangement includes a short introduction by University of Copenhagen’s Niels Henrik Hartvigson.

Jytte Høy: Words Found More Added at Møstings

There is a distinct literary thread in Danish artist Jytte Høy’s practice, especially in her work on the project “Words Found More Added,” which she initiated in 2011.
Here, selected text passages – ranging from Sappho’s fragments to contemporary literary works – form the basis for the creation of the works. Once she’s chosen the sentences, she responds with new sentences, and finally, spatial works to accompany the texts; words are transformed into objects. The exhibition is on display until 30th March and admission is free.

The series comprises 101 black-white photographs portraying members of the artist’s family and social circle, ranging in age from 0 to 100 – from eight-week-old Felina to centenarian Maria Victoria. The exhibition will be on display until June 2025.

Alexej Jawlensky at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Though closely associated with the European avant-garde movements at the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian painter Alexej Jawlensky (1864-1941) seems to have found his very own artistic voice rather late in life. This exhibition focuses on Jawlensky’s path towards a highly distinctive expression in the form of his small, beautiful and mysterious meditations. Having been born into a regimental family in Russia in 1864, he abandoned a potential military carreer in favor of the arts. At the art academy in St. Petersburg he met the painter Marianne von Werefkin and together, the couple moved to Munich. There, Jawlensky attended a private painting school with, among others, Wassily Kandinsky and became closely connected to the famous artist movement “Der Blaue Reiter” which Kandinsky initiated. The exhibition will be on display until June 2025.

Breaking Darkness at Nikolaj Kunsthal

Drawing inspiration from Lars von Trier’s oeuvre, Nikolaj Kunsthal is transformed into a sensory experience, blurring the boundaries between visual art and film. Through five site-specific installations spread across all galleries, including the iconic Nikolaj Tower, his works are put in dialogue with the historic church spaces, allowing for a physical and tactile encounter with the filmmaker’s aesthetics and imagery. The exhibition will be on display until July 2025.

Jakob Kudsk Steensen: Psychosphere at Cisternerne

With “Psychosphere,” Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen has created an immersive installation specifically for Cisternerne’s unique underground space, taking the emergence of life deep beneath the ocean’s surface as a point of departure. The exhibition is based on the artist’s own fieldwork and makes use of video projections, sound, light, and sculpture to weave a narrative about the profound interconnectedness shared by all living species on Earth. The exhibition will be on display until November 2025.

Little Table, Cover Thyself! at Design Museum Denmark

Experience how table-setting has changed over time and admire the collection of plates, figurines, jugs, and more. All the way through to 2025, seven of the museum’s historical tables are decorated with items from the renaissance until today.
