The golden light of a fading summer, an abundance of seasonal produce, and back-to-school energy: September in Copenhagen is one of the most charming months of the year. As locals settle back into their routines after the summer break and new students move to town, the city feels particularly dynamic. Meanwhile the last warm days invite to dips in the harbor, outdoor dining, and coffees or drinks sipped on sunny street corners. Add a packed itinerary of events and exhibitions and one thing’s for sure: September will be a treat.
Here are the best events in Copenhagen in September:
Tuesday 2nd September
Caravaggio’s Shadow at Cinemateket
Michele Placido’s historical drama follows Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio as he’s being investigated by the Catholic church for killing a rival. The film is both a portrait of one of the most well-known artists of the 16th century and a reflection on power and morality. Before the screening, Trine Ross delves into the life and art of the legendary Baroque painter and explores questions such as how does one paint the sacred with sinful models? Why was Caravaggio loved by the people and feared by the church? And how does the film capture the artist’s deep tension between faith and rebellion? The talk will take place in Danish, the film is screened with English subtitles. The arrangement starts at 6:30 pm.
Wednesday 3rd – Sunday 7th September
Strøm Festival

Directed by Paul Morrissey and produced by Andy Warhol, “Trash” follows heroin addict Joe as he’s looking for his next fix and engages in relationships with different women. Author and journalist Lars Movin who has previously published ‘American Avantgarde Film’ opens the night with an introduction. Please note that the introduction takes place in Danish. The evening starts at 8 pm.

Saturday 6th – Sunday 7th September
Performance BITCH by Miriam Kongstad at Frederiksberg Gardens
Miriam Kongstad’s performance piece BITCH challenges centuries of shame surrounding
female desire and lets it explode in a sensual, raw performance in the middle of a vast
parking structure. Commissioned by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, BITCH is now presented in the newly opened parking structure beneath John Winthers Plads at Frederiksberg Gardens, transforming the normally functional parking area surrounding a cylindrical core into a raw and resonant stage for one evening. The audience stands where the cars usually park and experiences the performance through the large “windows” into the atrium. Admission is free but requires a ticket.
